Kelly Emerson

Candidate for Island County Commissioner, District 3

Kelly Comments on the Primary

August 19th, 2010 at 12:00 pm by Kelly Emerson
“First and foremost, I would like to say ‘thank you’ to all of my supporters who honored me with your vote.  I greatly appreciate that my friends and neighbors in District 3 weighed my business experience as a critical need in these difficult times.  I am seeking all of your continued support, as I work to re-establish balance and bring sound fiscal responsibility to our county.”
Emerson currently holds 59.33% of the votes with her opponent, incumbent democrat John Dean, having the remainder 40.67%.  Both candidates reside on Camano Island and will now go forward to the general election which will be a countywide vote.
The turnout for this primary election was on par with past results but the numbers for the rejecting of a ballot proposition were perhaps overwhelming.  Proposition 1 was a property tax increase where the commissioner candidates varied greatly.  Dean saw raising taxes as the only answer to the counties management problems while Emerson pushed for alternative solutions.  Apparently the citizens went along with Emerson on this one.  Nearly 72% of voters gave a resounding No.
“Numbers like these (speaking of the 72%) could really open up some options for closing the budget gap,” says Emerson, “I do hope the board will handle this rationally.”
Kelly and her campaign now focus on the entirety of Island County. Come out and meet her at the Island County Fair this weekend and find out for yourself  why she is the ideal candidate for Island County Commissioner.

Freedom & Fun in Island County

August 12th, 2010 at 8:53 am by Kelly Emerson

If you have yet to turn in your ballot remember that August 17th is the deadline. Every vote counts! Let yours count for liberty!

Kelly is a patriot! She wants you to enjoy the liberty and freedom that your hard-earned dollars help afford. In order to get that message out to the public Kelly is out and about, not just in Camano, but on Whidbey Island as well. Her signs continue to pop up and the support that she receives just keeps her motivated to continue her campaign; in the hope that she will get to serve the community that she cares about, as well as its citizens.

Recently she was able to reach the community with the parade on Camano Island where her support was evident, meeting the people and addressing their concerns is what makes Kelly an accessible candidate to her constituents. She’ll also be out at the Parade in Langley on August 20th for the Island County Fair.

If you’re feeling a little left out do not dismay, because this weekend you can have your chance to meet Kelly, her husband and other Patriots with another community outreach, at the 2010 “Wild Whidbey” Poker Run.

Some of the stops are also offering specials! Frank’s Place in Oak Harbor will have free hot dogs for poker run participants. To show her appreciation to Frank, Kelly has purchased lunch (food only) for a maximum of 5 drivers of International Scouts or Flathead Harley riders. La Casita in Clinton will offer 50 cent tacos.

No On Prop. 1

July 26th, 2010 at 10:04 am by Kelly Emerson

Commissioners need to show some creativity

I was very pleased to have convinced the commissioners to allow me a part on the committee to write the statement against Proposition 1 on the August ballot.  The hard part was fitting all the reasons to be against it in only 200 words.  I think we did a fine job and I have included the statement below for those that haven’t had a chance to see it.

The truly disappointing thing in all this is the absolute lack of originality in their solutions.  Just as their in-compassionate minions at the state level have hiked taxes on everything from the toddler’s candy to the reward of a cold beer and 2011 will show U.S. the largest federal increases in history (click here for full story), locally they too can only answer with taxes.

When a family is struggling to make ends meet, the first thing it must do is evaluate and prioritize its spending.  Island County’s Commissioners have not done this.  They want to raise taxes on people during a recession, imposing greater financial hardship on families to make it easier for them to balance their budget.  If people don’t agree to pay higher taxes, County Commissioners threaten them with reductions to core services such as public safety and criminal justice.  What tax hike proponents haven’t mentioned, however, is that while County Commissioners threaten to cut services that serve the majority of county residents, they have been increasing funds for programs that benefit narrow groups of constituents.  This is the opposite of prioritizing spending. – Contributed by John Barnes

Below is the statement against Proposition 1, the property tax levy lid lift for the online voters’ guide produced by Kelly Emerson, Gary Wray and David Sherman

“We Island County voters have been seduced and/or threatened into approving 32% to 47% of our current property tax burden, (varies by locality).  It’s now time the government does its part of prioritizing its spending.  This permanent tax is not the correct solution to our temporary problem.

We have the third highest sales tax in the state, rank 12th out of 39 counties for property tax collected and the per person figures indicate we are the eighth costliest overall.  For sources, research and comparisons, visit http://renewliberty.com/IslandCounty.html.

The failure to separate citizens needs from government wants is largely to blame for the current situation.  It is a commissioner’s duty to justify the need for funded/unfunded mandates before just passing the cost on to the taxpayer.

Moreover, this proposition specifies no departments or services to receive the revenue.  In essence, what we would be allowing is the creation of another “slush fund.”  As is the case with most of these increases, this one also allows for the diverting of current funds.  That means if we allow this new increase they can shift existing funds to any projects they choose.

Please don’t be fooled by this Trojan horse. Vote NO on proposition 1.”

Greetings from Camano

About Kelly Emerson

Kelly grew up in Southern California with a stay-at-home Mom and an Operating Engineer Father. She schooled in the Electrical trade but felt she would never achieve her goal of home-ownership if she stayed in the area. So, with her construction skills and passion for travel she set off to find a more enjoyable part of the country to reside in. She settled near the Great Lakes where she built her own home in Erie, Pennsylvania. While living in Erie, Kelly also completed an International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers apprenticeship and sat on the loan committee board at her Local Credit Union. Then while working in Detroit Michigan, she found her husband of now nearly a dozen years, Ken. Kelly went on further with her skills in the Electrical Industry by becoming a project estimator and then to manage a number of the million dollar projects that she was awarded. She also acquired her Master Electrician’s and Electrical Contractor’s Licenses while living in Michigan and successfully became a small business owner. Kelly remembers, “As an owner, operator and employer, I had to quickly learn the skills of budgeting priorities and fiscal responsibility. I was a little surprised to find it such a different experience after all the years of managing projects”. The Emersons were able to move out of Michigan before it began its steady decline. Among the reasons they settled to beautiful Island County at that time, was its courageously independent and common sense approach to local Government. Wanting to help keep Whidbey and Camano from catching “the Blues”, Kelly decided to get active with local campaigns. Then when the federal government threw out the (proverbial “straw that broke the camels back”) Stimulus Bill, Kelly headed to Seattle to exercise her first amendment right. When the Tea Party movement took hold, she offered to organize events in a more northern region so that those with difficulties making the Seattle events would still be able to express their views. After developing the website, Renewliberty.com for organizational purposes, she looked for a location that would accommodate both Whidbey and Camano Islands while bringing the most impact to the area in general. April 15th 2009, her first “Tax Day Tea Party” in Everett was a tremendous success. Through the course of the all day event, the over 1000 people that gathered made front page “above the fold” news with the Everett Herald. Since then Kelly has been asked to produce a video for the Dallas Tea Party Organization which aired it live to their 35,000 in attendance. With the support of many other local Tea Party groups, the friends and supporters of (Renewliberty.com) marched the “Western WA Tea Party Patriots” in Everett’s last July 4th “Colors of Freedom” Parade. Showing her care for economic state of WA, and the country, Kelly traveling to Washington, D.C. for the Emergency House Call on Congress in November, where she took it upon herself to personally deliver, to both Sen. Cantwell and Rep. Larsen, many letters and sentiments from their constituents. With the election year upon us, Kelly and the team of (Renewliberty.com) have enhanced their focus to doing all they can to see that liberal politicians, and the destruction they bring, are eradicated. After seeing the turnout at their second Candidate Forum in January, Kelly and her team are very encouraged. “It’s a shot in the arm” says Kelly, who has decided to take reinvigorating the idea of “Representative” government personally by running for office herself. Kelly cares about fiscal responsibility, personal accountability and the citizens of the wonderful state of Washington.
